What does the 1-to-5 rating mean?

It's the average from people who drank it, not from a critic. In practice almost every wine lands between 3 and 4.5 (the overall average is 3.9), so the number alone is misleading. That's why we also say where it stands against the others: among the top 10%, among the top 25%, around average or below average.

And the list's "Best rating" order adjusts the rating for the number of ratings: 4.8 from 200 people counts for less than 4.6 from 16,000 (the card always shows the raw rating, and you can sort the list by that alone).

Where the data comes from: the technical details come from the X-Wines project, an open scientific dataset built by Brazilian researchers at IFRS with Portuguese universities (de Azambuja, R. X.; Morais, A. J.; Filipe, V. X-Wines: A Wine Dataset for Recommender Systems and Machine Learning, Big Data and Cognitive Computing, MDPI, 2023, 7(1), 20), and the rating is the average from real drinkers, not critics.
The curation is ours: the 2,000 labels on the house list and the second batch were chosen by criteria and checked by the house; the world collection comes in whole from X-Wines, with a floor of 200 ratings, translated by the house and corrected whenever someone points out a mistake. We don't show exact prices: they change every week. What you see is the range the house checked at a big store in Brazil, with the month, on 188 labels. Today's price is a job for the Garimpo.
