Herdade de Gâmbia

Moscatel de Setúbal

A dessert wine from Setúbal, Portugal. Full-bodied. Made only from Muscat of Setúbal.

The house says

This is Setúbal's most traditional wine: Moscatel de Setúbal, made only from Moscatel Graúdo, with the fermentation stopped by grape spirit to keep the grape's sweetness, then a few years in cask (4 to 5, according to the older sheet). Herdade de Gâmbia has belonged to the Borba family since 1917: some 600 hectares along the Ribeira da Marateca, 9 km from Setúbal, all of it inside the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve. It has grown grapes since 1985 and made wine since 2009 with Boas Quintas, the Dão house that bottles it (winemaker Nuno Cancela de Abreu). The estate planted ten hectares of Moscatel in 1986, before the red grapes. The tasting sheet mentions muscat, orange blossom, raisins and dried fruit, balanced sweetness and full body, and suggests serving it at 10 to 12 °C, as an aperitif or with traditional Portuguese sweets. It is not in the X-Wines base, so it has no rating from drinkers yet. Had it? Toast and tell us.

Basic details checked by the house in Oct 2026; acidity will be added once the house checks the label.

No rating from drinkers yetThis label isn't in the X-Wines database, where the search ratings come from. The house added it because the community asked; the house doesn't make up ratings. The community rating, just below, is a different one: it comes from cellar members.
Had it already? Give it a Cheers and tell us on Open Bottle: that's how it gets a voice.

Are you this wine's producer?

This page comes from the public X-Wines database or from what the house read on the producer's website. Whoever makes the wine knows best: send the official tech sheet, correct what's wrong or ask for it to come down. No producer pays to get in, to move up or to leave, and the sheet you send takes precedence over any other source.

A label outside X-Wines, an open scientific dataset (de Azambuja, R. X. et al., 2023): basic details gathered and checked by the house, in the month shown under “The house says”; no rating, because ratings aren't made up. The price range only shows up once the house checks it at a big store in Brazil; this one hasn't been checked yet. Finds with the price checked on the date are in The Garimpo.
